Karuri Water & Sanitation Company is a limited liability company established in 2007, commencing operations in June 2008. Initially owned by the former Karuri Town Council, it is now fully owned by the Kiambu County Government following devolution. The company operates as one of eight water service providers within Kiambu County, specifically serving the Kiambaa sub-county which encompasses five wards: Kihara, Ndenderu, Muchatha, Karuri, and Cianda.
Its primary mandate is the provision of clean water and sewerage services, regulated by the Water Service Regulatory Board to ensure consumer protection. Starting with just one borehole in Banana and 70 customer connections, the company has expanded significantly through rehabilitation of community water projects, development of new water sources, and extension of distribution networks, now serving over 10,000 connections.
It utilizes 12 boreholes and 10 offtakes from the Sasumua-Nairobi transmission line to supply water to a population of approximately 188,209 in Kiambaa Constituency, achieving about 70% water coverage. The company maintains a self-service portal for payments and provides resources including tariff information, connection guides, and a complaints process.
